Hey Brandon,

I need help! I have TONS of acne on my face and I think it’s SUPER disgusting. There’s also this girl I like, but my friend told me she doesn’t like me because of my acne. I tried using special products to remove the acne on my face but the results were TERRIBLE. They actually made it WORSE. I don’t know what to do. Please help me!

Anxious About Acne

What’s Up Anxious About Acne,

Oh man, Acne is THE WORST. It’s one of those things that are SO frustrating because it’s out of your control AND it’s…well, in your face. In other words, you can’t really hide it! ☹

If you have a bad hair day, you can wear a hat. If you need glasses, you can try contacts. If you don’t like what you’re wearing, you can just wear something else.

But the skin on your face…there’s just no hiding it. So it’s one of those things you kind of have to accept.

I’m sorry you think it’s disgusting. The honest truth is, you might not like how it looks, but it’s a normal thing that happens as you grow up. It doesn’t happen to everyone, which seems unfair, but if it makes you feel any better, people with acne-free skin are probably dealing with other bummer side effects of becoming a teen.

And here’s some more good news—in most cases, the older you get, the more your acne will go away.

There are lots of products out there that will claim to make your acne disappear. But as you’ve already experienced, they rarely help and can even make things worse. If it’s really, really bad, your parents can take you to a dermatologist, or a doctor for skin. They may be able to help by giving you prescription medicines.

But, your doctor might also just tell you it’s a normal part of life.

As for girls who don’t like you because of your skin…first of all, it sounds like that’s not something you heard first hand from your crush. Dude, someone else told you this which means it’s not reliable info.

But even if it’s true, well…forget her! If she’s not willing to look more than skin deep (LOL ,pun intended!) then she doesn’t deserve you.

How do you deal with stuff about yourself that you don’t like but can’t change? Tell us in the comments!
